It is common to have times where we feel a bit low and most people know what its like to feel sad or unhappy. However,  sometimes it can last longer than usual and can have a significant effect on our day to day living, developing into depression. The effects of depression include negative thinking about ourselves, others and the world around us and a loss of motivation and interest in life. 

Common symptoms of depression include:


  • Depressed mood - feeling low, sad, fed up, numb, empty
  • Loss of interest or enjoyment
  • Self-criticism and guilt
  • Increased irritability and anger
  • Pessimism
  • Hopelessness
  • Feeling anxious, worried or tense
  • Loss of energy
  • Reduced activity
  • Finding it hard to be with people
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Problems with memory
  • Changes in sleep pattern
  • Changes in appetite 
  • Loss of libido
  • A preoccupation with negative thoughts
